WADEZIG! ROCKTOBER SERIES 2024
WITH SYRCAA
For this year's rocktober series, we entrusted our slot to Syrcaa, a female artist illustrator from Malaysia, the rock, metal, underground music that her brother always played during her childhood is one of the things that has greatly influenced her work until now.
Check out our short interview with syrcaa. Enjoy
Wadezig! : Hi Syrcaa, how are you? It’s so great to see you and all your amazing work!
Syrcaa : I’m doing well, thank you. It’s great to be here. It’s great to be here and share more about my work.”
Wadezig! : Want to share a bit about your journey?
Syrcaa : My journey started from a deep curiosity about the darker aspects of life, from the surreal to the grotesque. I always found beauty in what others might find unsettling. I originally wanted to be a tattoo artist, which has influenced a lot in my art style. It was a way to express my fascination with mystery and the unknown, merging that with my love for intricate details.”
Wadezig! : When did all these horrors start? What drew you in?
Syrcaa : It probably started in childhood. I have five brothers who are into rock and metal music, and being the youngest, I was influenced by their tastes since they loved sharing it with me. I also used to have a lot of nightmares, which became a good source of inspiration for my work. Those experiences really fueled my interest in darker, more surreal themes.”
Wadezig! : Why did you choose that style of work?
Syrcaa : I’ve always been interested in pushing the boundaries of what’s considered beautiful. Darkness, mystery, and even horror allow me to challenge conventional aesthetics, and I believe there’s a unique kind of beauty in the grotesque.”
Wadezig! : I noticed a lot of your work is in black and white. Any reason for that?
Syrcaa : I love how black and white strips things down to their core. It emphasizes contrast and lets the viewer focus on the details and emotion. There’s something raw and timeless about it, which matches the dark and surreal themes I often explore.”
Wadezig! : Do you prefer manual or digital art? What is the reason for that?
Syrcaa : I like a combination of both. I do most of the details manually because it gives me more control and a deeper connection to the piece, but I also edit a bit digitally to refine the final look. Each medium has its strengths, and combining them helps me achieve the layered and intricate style I aim for.”
Wadezig! : Who are the artists or bands that inspire your works?
Syrcaa : The artist that used to inspire my work is Christopher Lovell. His dark, detailed style really resonated with me. Lately, I’ve been getting more fond of Allen Williams and Ozabu. Their intricate, atmospheric approach aligns with where my own style is evolving.”
Wadezig! : What themes or elements do you usually incorporate into your artwork?
Syrcaa : I often incorporate themes of duality—light and dark, beauty and horror. My art tends to focus on the human condition, hidden fears, and the surreal creatures that live in our imaginations.”
Wadezig! : Tell us something about yourself that we might not know.
Syrcaa : I have a background in both traditional art and graphic design. While my public work leans into the surreal and grotesque, I’m also drawn to creating product designs and wearable art, which I plan to explore more.”
Wadezig! : It’s amazing that we can collaborate for the first time and that it happened so fast. What are your thoughts?
Syrcaa : I’m excited to see where this collaboration takes us. It feels like the perfect fusion of two creative worlds, and I love when things come together unexpectedly—it keeps the creative energy fresh.”
Wadezig! : Do you have any upcoming projects that you’re particularly excited about?
Syrcaa : Yes, I have a few things in the works. I’m currently focusing on expanding my brand with custom pieces, like helmets and silver rings, that merge the aesthetic of my art with wearable designs. It’s for a program that I’m currently taking a part of which is called Young Art Entrepeneurs. There are also some collaborations that I’m excited about, but I can’t reveal too much just yet!”
Wadezig! : And where can people see your work?
Syrcaa : “You can find my work on my ArtStation website and across social media platforms, where I frequently post new pieces. I’ll also be participating in a few upcoming events, so stay tuned for those announcements.”
